Automation can transform a business. It can also make a broken process faster at breaking. The difference is what’s in place before you build.
The most common mistake: moving too fast. Buying the platform, building sequences, and wondering six weeks later why nothing is working. Usually it’s not the technology. It’s that the foundations weren’t ready.
Work through this checklist before you automate anything.
The 5-point checklist
1. You know who your customer is
✅ Ready: You can describe your ideal customer in two sentences — their situation, their problem, what they need to hear.
⚠️ Not yet: Your market is “anyone who needs what we offer.” Automation won’t fix unclear positioning.
2. Your process exists, even if it’s manual
✅ Ready: You can describe what happens at each stage of your customer journey, even if someone does it by hand.
⚠️ Not yet: Every team member handles things differently. Fix the process before you automate it.
3. Your contact data is usable
✅ Ready: Contacts are tagged, key fields are populated, and you know what each segment looks like.
⚠️ Not yet: Your CRM is full of incomplete records and duplicates. Clean it before you build on top of it.
4. You have something worth saying
✅ Ready: You have testimonials, case studies, or a clear articulation of what makes you different.
⚠️ Not yet: Your follow-ups say “just checking in.” Work on the message before the mechanism.
5. You’re ready to measure and iterate
✅ Ready: You’re willing to review open rates, response rates, and conversion monthly — and adjust.
⚠️ Not yet: You want to build it once and never touch it again. That produces mediocre automation.
Automation makes a good process great. It makes a broken one faster at breaking. Get the foundations right first.
What if you’re not fully ready?
Most businesses score three or four out of five. That means one or two things to address before building, not months of work before you can start.
Knowing where the gaps are is the most useful starting point. It’s exactly what the Launchy Engine Room Analysis is designed to surface.
