Who’s Answering Your Phone While You’re On The Tools?
You’re elbow deep in a hot water system when your phone buzzes. You can’t get to it. Twenty minutes later you call back and it goes to voicemail on their end too, because they’ve already rung the next plumber on the list. That job, and the referral that would have come with it, is gone. It happened again this week. It happens every week, to every trades and service business that answers its own phone.
The missed call problem is getting worse, not better
Most small business owners already know the phone is their number one source of new work. What’s easy to miss is how much of that work quietly disappears because nobody was free to answer. You’re not losing these leads to a competitor with better prices or better reviews. You’re losing them to whoever picked up first.
Why this is suddenly a fast moving category
This week a Spanish startup called HeyDiga raised a 5.5 million euro seed round to build exactly this: an AI that answers your phone, WhatsApp and web chat around the clock (Dealroom, 10 September 2026). It’s barely a year old and already has more than 200 customers across Spain, France and Italy, selling into car dealers, clinics, restaurants and real estate agents. The investors backing it aren’t betting on a gimmick. They’re betting that answering the phone properly is one of the clearest, easiest wins in small business automation, which is exactly what we see when we sit down with clients.
What this means for your business
You don’t need to sign up with HeyDiga specifically, and we’re not suggesting you should. What matters is the pattern behind it: AI phone and chat agents that can actually book a job, answer a common question or take a message properly are no longer an experiment. They’re a normal part of the toolkit now, and the businesses adopting them are the ones that stop bleeding leads out of hours and on busy days. The technology sits on top of whatever CRM or scheduling system you’re already using. You don’t need to rip anything out to get the benefit.
Where to start
Start by tracking, for one week, every call your business misses and what would have happened if someone had answered. Most owners are surprised by the number. That number is your business case. Once you have it, the question isn’t whether to fix this, it’s which system fits the way your business actually runs, and that’s a conversation worth having before you pick anything.
